The Vagina Monologues– V-Day 2008 will be the fifth year celebration for the production of the Monologues in Yarmouth. It will also be the 10th anniversary for the world wide production. We are always very proud and pleased with the production and the support of the community, production team, audience and actresses. If you are interesting in participating this year please give us a call. This production will be held in March. The date will be announced soon.

Spring Into Wellness - TCWC’s second annual Spring Into Wellness, a women’s health fair, will be held on April 19, 2008 at Beacon Church. It is a partnership between the Sexual Health Centre, Addiction Services and TCWC. We look forward to making this years Wellness Fair bigger and better than last years!

Women and Public Pensions– Women and Public Pensions is an initiative of the Western Women’s Centres (Second Story Women’s Centre, Women’s Place Women’s Centre and Tri-County Women’s Centre). We have completed the first two phases of this project and the third phase has just started which includes the women’s centre from Sheet Harbour and Truro. We will be holding information sessions for senior women in early spring on the Public Pension system.

Women and Gambling - Taking Control: Making Changes– In 2005, TCWC completed a community assessment of Women and Gaming in the Tri-Counties. This assessment looked at how gaming affects women. In 2008, we have received funding to give women the opportunity to tell their stories about how problem gambling affect or is affecting their lives. The project also will be looking toward the possibility of creating a support group for women who have been affected by gambling.

Youth Homelessness Assessment– With financial assistance from the National Public Safety and The Nova Scotia Office of Economic Renewal TCWC has just completed a 10 month community assessment of Youth Homelessness in Yarmouth. Currently, we are working with community leaders to take this project one step further to explore the possibility of offering affordable housing to youth mothers.

TCWC Community Garden– TCWC has had a community garden for the past 2 years. This garden is available to anyone who does not have the land or resources to have their own garden. Everyone should have access to fresh vegetables.

Yarmouth Teen Pregnancy Project- We are very excited to be participating with this project. The rate of teen pregnancy in Nova Scotia is very different depending on the community where young women live. Significantly more young women from Yarmouth become pregnant before age 20 than in other similar sized communities in the province. Working with the Yarmouth Working Group for the Prevention of Teenage Pregnancy, a research team from Dalhousie University will be conducting a three year study examining factors that influence teen pregnancy.  The team will be using interviews, focus groups and surveys to gather data about which factors (such as individual knowledge, parent-child communication, sexual health services, and community attitudes about teenage pregnancy) are related to adolescent sexual risk behaviours, how these factors influence adolescent pregnancy and whether they can be changed.

Project partners include Dalhousie University, South West Nova District Health Authority, physicians, Tri-County Regional School Board, Yarmouth County Community Health Board, Tri-County Women’s Resource Centre, Université Sainte-Anne, Community Services, Sexual Health Centre, RCMP Yarmouth Detachment, parents, and youth.
