Services and Programs
Women of All Ages Come to the Centre to:
- Access support counseling
- Get information and referrals to other agencies or services - if you do not know where to go for help we can assist with suggesting what organization can help
- Have someone go to an appointment for support or advocate for them - we will go to an appointment or meeting for support or we will speak on behalf of a woman including lawyer appointments, Court, Child Welfare, Social Assistance, medical, workers at the Provincial Building
- Attend a program - all of our programs are developed by women for women based on the needs and wants of the community
- Get support to go back to work or school - including setting educational, career and/or life goals
- Get a cup of tea or coffee and to chat - the centre offers a safe and warming environment for women to come and take a break
The Women's Centre staff will assist with any issue including:
- Poverty and economic concerns - including budgeting and income tax preparation
- Education and employment - we can help develop or update a resume and offer support and suggestions for job searching
- Legal Information and support - including custody and access, divorce and separation. Please note we do not offer legal advice
- Parenting - we can work with you one on one or we also offer a program for parents parenting teens
- Housing - rental information including issues with your landlord
- Relationship breakdown and custody - we can go with you to lawyer appointments and/or court
- Self-esteem and empowerment - we offer one on one work around self-esteem and self-empowerment. We also offer a program called Women Moving Forward: A Program of Self-Empowerment

Programs
Running to a Healthier Lifestyle -is a new program we are offering. The 8 week program is for women who smoke or have recently quit, and wish to explore a healthier lifestyle. We will be working towards the goal of the participants being able to walk or run 5km. This program incorporates a walking/running program with workshops on nutrition, tobacco cessation, yoga, and other helpful topics.
Women Moving Forward - This program takes a look at women and the issues they face on a daily basis. The program covers a variety of topics including self‐esteem, communication, goal setting, body image, anger as a positive force, coping with change, and stress management. The program focuses on women supporting women to take control of their life and to start their journey. This program also allows the flexibility and safe space to address issues as they may come up during the program.
Have I Got A Story to Tell: Women and Addictions - This 16 week program is for women dealing with gambling and other addictions. The program explores and shares through writing, art, and other creative expressions, as well as alternative therapies like Auricular Acupuncture, Yoga, Reflexology and Guided Imagery, ways to reduce the harm from addiction. We are offering this program in Digby this Fall.
A Facilitator’s Guide on the program will be produced this Fall. If you are interested in a copy please let us know. Funded through the Nova Scotia Gaming Foundation
Voices: A Program Of Self‐Discovery and Empowerment - Voices is a program for girls in grades 7, 8 and 9 and focuses on exploring their unique traits and strengths, thoughts, feelings and ideas, relationships, taking care of yourself, dealing with stress, expressing anger, decision-making, drugs and alcohol, healthy sexuality, support and celebrating who you are. We offered this program in 10 Junior High Schools throughout the Tri-Counties last year, finishing it off with a week-end retreat in mid-July. This program is being offered in junior highs throughout the Tri-Counties.
S.T.E.P. Program (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting of Teens) - This is a program that was developed in response to the special challenges of parenting teenagers in the world today. The program looks at effective communication, descipline and problem solving. This program will start again early 2012. For more information, please call the centre.
