Women's Economic Security Project
“Women Living in Rural and Remote Communities and Small Urban Centres” is a 3 year project exploring issues relating to women’s economic security in the Yarmouth area. The goal is to implement measures which will have a direct and positive impact on women who are living with economic insecurity.
The phases and activities that we plan to accomplish over the next three years are:
Forming a “Project Partnership Committee” of local community leaders & stakeholders:
A “Project Partnership Committee” will be formed to include representatives of organizations (both community and government) who are familiar with the issues and barriers to women’s economic security. We want to collaborate with all relevant partners to identify gaps, priorities and opportunities and work together to implement effective mechanisms, supports, strategies and solutions. These inputs will provide insight and guidance at all phases of the 3-yr. project, as well as referrals of women to take part in the project
Forming a focus group of diverse women who live with economic insecurity:
In order to actualize this project we will involve women who are impacted by economic insecurity in the process and planning from the start. In the first year we want to involve 15 women from diverse backgrounds who have direct experience(s) with economic insecurity.
Conducting a “Gender Based Analysis” of service providers:
A “gender based analysis” of local service providers & agencies will be conducted with respect to women’s economic status and specific needs. The analysis will assist the women participants and project partners in understanding the broader factors that impact women’s economic insecurity. This analysis will be the building block that underpins a community plan to address women’s economic security and wellbeing.
Conducting a SWOT Analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities & Threats):
We will conduct a SWOT Analysis of the Yarmouth area as it applies to barriers to women’s economic security. Some of these broader issues we have to consider are affordable housing, transportation, childcare, financial literacy, access to training and re-entry into the workforce.
Create and implement a “community plan”:
With collaboration between the working groups of women and the “Project Partnership Committee”, a community plan will be developed that will identify gaps, priorities, opportunities, valuable resources and supports and potential strategies. An implementation plan outlining the actions, timelines, responsibilities, and outcomes will be developed together by the women and stakeholders, considering the needs of the women and of the community. We want the plan to be tangible and realistic so we are able to have a positive impact on women and on the community. Ideas of strategies that have already been discussed include co-operative housing and the development of a social enterprise which would give women work place skills.
