Check out our Youth Truth Matters website and Facebook page!

Over the last three years our Youth Truth Matters project has taken a harm reduction and youth led approach to illicit drugs in our tri county community. Our “youth take the lead approach” attempts to lessen the use of illicit drugs in our youth and address community harm.

A significant part of the project was centered on developing youth leadership and youth being the leaders on addressing illicit drugs in the community. Over one hundred youth came forward over the past three years to be youth leaders. In preparation for their role, the Youth Leaders went through an initial leadership training weekend and additional educational sessions on illicit drugs. The youth also developed their own workshops and educational tools on illicit drugs which they presented to their peers and the broader community.

Based on the various components of the Youth Truth Matters project; Youth Leadership, Youth Created Workshops, Parenting Programs, and Community Events (facilitated by the youth), we created a Peer Educator Toolkit. The Toolkit was also fully translated into French.

The Toolkit will be disseminated across the tri counties and the province over the next few months. It will also be available on two web sites youthtruthmatters.com and www.tricountywomenscentre.org.

We are very grateful for the support and cooperation from the two School Boards we worked with, Tri-County Regional School Board and Conseil scolaire acadien provincial.

Project staff were; Kirsta Morris--Yarmouth County Project Coordinator; Amy MacKinnon--Shelburne County Project Coordinator; and Evan Nemeth--Digby County Project Coordinator. Their dedication to working with the youth, stakeholders, and community enables this important work to be achieved.
